Washington, D.C., 10 May 2021. The Arctic Institute (TAI) is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. To celebrate a decade of scholarship and outreach, the Institute is excited to launch a year-long calendar of events to connect with our dedicated readers and all those interested in the Arctic. These online events will include staff reflections on a decade of growth, infographics, and social media campaigns.
Malte Humpert founded The Arctic Institute in 2011 as a think tank devoted to multidisciplinary analysis of the Arctic. It was one of the first think tanks devoted exclusively to the Arctic through broad geographic and thematic lenses, and grew from an individual operation with weekly stories to half a dozen staff members in less than a year. Today, the Arctic Institute boasts forty staff members, publishes weekly analysis pieces from scholars around the world, and manages a newsletter with subscribers from ninety countries. Since 2016, TAI has consistently been ranked in the top 100 think tanks in the United States by the University of Pennsylvania’s Global Go To Think Tank Index.
“More than 100 researchers from around the world have been part of the team at The Arctic Institute,” Humpert said. “Together we’ve provided research about the Arctic region via different platforms and media. One key goal of TAI is to provide opportunities for young and motivated researchers to contribute to the creation and dissemination of knowledge about the Arctic, and to spark passions for this fascinating region.”
“I’m honored to lead TAI’s tenth anniversary special,” Pavel Devyatkin said. Pavel is a Research Associate and Leadership Group member who has worked for TAI since 2016. “The team and I are excited to share a variety of articles, infographics, and media that highlight our organization’s evolution, important academic contributions, and ongoing commitment to informing the world on critical issues in the changing Arctic.” In addition to TAI’s anniversary publications, followers can get involved with the celebrations through an upcoming launch of a social media initiative.
Established in 2011, The Arctic Institute is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. with a network of researchers across the world. The Arctic Institute’s mission is to help inform policy for a rapidly changing Arctic in the context of the climate crisis.
