Call for 2024 Research Intern (Editorial Team - Book Review)

The Arctic Institute (TAI) is seeking one well-qualified graduate student to work as the Book Review Editorial Intern for The Arctic Institute’s online publications page. The intern will work with the editorial team and Editor-in-Chief to manage and edit book review submissions, coordinate with authors, and publish one book review per month. The intern may be asked to assist with additional editorial tasks such as editing and/or reviewing 1-2 articles per month. Indigenous students are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Duration: October 2024-March 2025; Six months, with the possibility of extension based on superior merit
  • Location: Virtual, all nationalities encouraged to apply

  • The Arctic Institute is an all-volunteer organization, meaning that interns, like staff, are not paid.

Depending on interest and availability, the Book Review Editorial Intern may be given significant opportunities to contribute to TAI’s work, including opportunities to provide research support to Senior Fellows, administrative duties, and logistical support at TAI conferences and events (virtual during the pandemic). TAI interns are also given the opportunity to submit a longer-form analysis through an article(s) for publication on TAI’s webpage, with the mentorship of our Editor-in-Chief through the peer review process.

Successful applicants will have:

  • Enrollment in a graduate-level program in a relevant discipline with an Arctic focus (communications, journalism, international relations, environmental science, economics, sociology, history, etc.)
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of current Arctic events
  • Native or near-native English proficiency
  • Excellent demonstrated writing skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines; flexibility to work across time zones
  • Prior experience in journalism or content/media editing is an asset
