Privacy Policy

Who we are

The Arctic Institute (TAI) is committed to safeguarding your privacy. This Privacy Statement describes TAI’s policies and procedures on the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information. If you do not agree to be bound by this Privacy Statement, please do not use this website, submit any information to TAI, or subscribe to our newsletter, The Arctic This Week (TATW). In case you subscribe to TATW, you can unsubscribe from it at any time.

Our website address is: https://www.thearcticinstitute.org (in the following ‘the Site’).

Which personal data we collect and why we collect it

TAI collects your personal information in a variety of ways. Much of this information is provided directly from you. For example, when you sign up for TATW on our website, you provide us with your email address.

We have gathered two basic types of information through the Site: “Personal Information” and “Non-Personal Information.”

Personal Information is information that identifies you as an individual, that is, your name, e-mail address and affiliation. This contact information is stored when you submit an article to TAI. We use the WordPress plugin Contact Form 7, which does not store submitted messages anywhere.

Non-Personal Information is aggregated information, demographic information, IP addresses, and any other information that does not contain specific identifying information about your identity. This information is stored via Mailchimp when you subscribe to TATW.

Consent

By being a subscriber to our newsletter TATW, you have provided us with your consent to use your contact information for sending you updates about news from the Arctic region, TAI’s work, and events which we believe are of interest to our newsletter subscribers.

You are free to revoke your consent for us to process this information, by sending us an email to info@thearcticinstitute.org. If you revoke your consent, it will only apply to future processing.

Please be aware that if you revoke your consent, you will not be included in any email updates related to TAI.

Cookies

TAI collects information from you when you interact with our website. For example, we use “cookies,” data that a web server transfers to an individual’s computer for recordkeeping purposes. Cookies are an industry standard used by most websites and can facilitate users’ ongoing access to and use of a particular website. Cookies do not cause damage to your computer systems or files. If you do not want information collected through the use of cookies, there is a simple procedure in most browsers that allows you to automatically decline cookies, or to be given the choice of declining or accepting the transfer of a particular cookie, or cookies from a particular website, to your computer.

If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt-in to save your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will be deleted after one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on the Site may include embedded content (such as videos, images, and articles). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

Please note that our website uses a WordPress platform, is hosted by HostGator and uses Yoast SEO, MonsterInsights Google Analytics and MonsterInsights’ EU Compliance add-on. The data provided via these services help us provide the desired coverage that our readers are interested.

Since Google Analytics uses cookies to track the information we use, we have provided the ability for you to allow or refuse the use of cookies. You can also opt-out by downloading specific add-ons to your browser.

Who we share your data with

We do not share your personal information with anyone outside TAI.

How long we retain your data

We retain your data via Google Analytics for 26 months.

For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on the Site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

How we protect your data

We monitor website traffic and webserver logs with the Wordfence plugin.

What data breach procedures we have in place

In case of a data breach, which will “result in a risk for the rights and freedoms of individuals,” our content manager will notify all those affected by the breach within 72 hours.

Which third parties we receive data from

We do not receive data from third parties.

This website, however, may contain links to third party websites. These linked sites are not under TAI’s control and TAI is not responsible for the privacy practices or the contents of any such linked site, or any link contained in any linked site. TAI provides such links only as a convenience, and the inclusion of a link on this website does not imply endorsement of the linked site by TAI. If you provide any Personal Information through any such third party website, your interaction will occur on such third party’s web site (not this website) and the Personal Information you provide will be collected by, and controlled by the privacy policy of, that third party. TAI recommends that you familiarize yourself with the privacy policies and practices of any such third parties. Please note that this policy does not address the privacy or information practices of any third parties.

Changes to this policy

We reserve the right to change this Privacy Statement. We recommend that you check this website regularly to stay up to date with our privacy policy. The most current version of the policy will govern our use of your information and will always be at https://www.thearcticinstitute.org/privacy-policy/. By continuing to use this website after those changes become effective, you agree to be bound by the revised Privacy Statement.
